February 20, 2002 : LCWR Letter to the Catholic Bishops of the United States on matters of defense and peacemaking

To the Catholic Bishops of the United States:

We write to you, the pastors, teachers, and moral leaders of the church in the United States, as the National Board of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious.  We applaud your efforts to reflect on the church’s teachings concerning the defense of human dignity and the conditions for the pursuit of a just war.  In the evolving conditions of the present response to terrorism, however, we perceive a need for further guidance and clarification on matters of defense and the call to peacemaking.

September 18, 2001: LCWR Letter to Congress

Dear Member of Congress:

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) represents over 70,000 U.S. Catholic sisters. As leaders of the LCWR, we express, on behalf of all our members, both sorrow and anger at the wanton destruction of human life resulting from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. We pray and mourn with those who lost loved ones and friends and offer prayers of healing for those who suffered injury. We offer condolences and prayerful support to the families whose lives are shattered and forever changed by the violence of these past days.
