The Leadership Conference of Women Religious rejoices with Catholics throughout the world as we anticipate the canonizations of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II.
Both men are outstanding examples of selfless devotion to the Gospel and tireless labor to make the Catholic Church a beacon of hope and light for a world in need of both.
On the occasion of the canonizations, we recall with deep gratitude the extraordinary accomplishments of both these church leaders. We remember John XXIII as a seasoned diplomat, outstanding church historian, and devoted pastor who courageously called for wide-sweeping church renewal by convening the Second Vatican Council. John Paul II’s heroic efforts to bring the Gospel to all parts of the world, his fearless condemnation of the gulf between rich and poor, and his bravery in publicly battling the disease which claimed his life are among the many contributions that merit our deepest respect and esteem.
The canonization of these two leaders is an invitation to each of us to emulate the best of their lives. We call on their intercession to help us be bearers of Christ to a world crying for the justice, tenderness, mercy, and unfailing love that these two men so generously embodied and by which they will be forever remembered.
