'The Joy of the Gospel'

Never make an important decision in November or February!" So said the novice director, decades ago. Perhaps the cold grey days of a Michigan November, introducing winter, and the still grey days of February, delaying spring, prompted that warning to young novices.
As leaders, we are well aware that decisions must be made, whenever. Obviously Pope Francis is of the same mind. Toward the end of November 2013, he launched "The Joy of the Gospel" (Evangelii Gaudium). My first reaction was joy in its uplifting and inspiring message. My next was awareness of a daunting challenge.
The opening line, "The joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus," is both light and challenge. It is a light, inviting joy. It is a challenge not to communicate the grey of the February sky, as if I had never encountered Jesus. I am reminded of the line attributed to Teresa of Avila, "God deliver us from sorry saints!"
