Hope: A Time to Every Purpose Under Heaven

When I looked out my bedroom window one recent morning, I was surprised to see the leaves remained so green. Usually by this time, the hues have changed from multiple greens to a palette of red, yellow, brown, and orange. By now, I thought all our conferences, meetings, social engagements, and celebrations would be in-person allowing greetings to be warmed by the touch of a handshake or an embrace long-awaited. By now, I trusted that our awareness of Earth’s critical need for healing would have resulted in unparalleled global action to address climate change and the pandemic. By now, I prayed that the systemic sides of polarized perspectives would have crumbled some, moving our nation and church into places of mutual listening and reconciliation. By now, I hoped that all I waited for would greet me in this morning light. Just then, the lyrics from a song by Peter Seeger came to mind: “To everything (turn, turn, turn), there is a season (turn, turn, turn), and a time to every purpose, under heaven.”
